July Fourth

Can this experiment keep holding
As a country bravely free
Can we live in ups and downs
When eyes to eyes won’t see
To celebrate the Fourth today 
Is to live with varied thoughts
And to tolerate the difference
Without violence being wrought
Sustaining such a union
Is a challenge every day
But we’ve come to learn the lesson
Life is better in this way
So watch the skies above
For the fireworks red glare
And be grateful for the burden
Freedom’s cost is ours to bear
